Christine's Corner Change. One word says so much about where we are at this time in our history, not only in my own personal history, but also our country’s as well as CoSozo’s. Change is something that is occurring within each moment of every day in our lives. But change is also something that can be a very scary thing for many people. It holds within it a certain amount of uncertainty, a feeling of not knowing, and most of us would much rather feel that we are in charge of our destiny, that we are in the know at the very least within our own lives.
Vision and Blindness: Common Myths Debunkedby Catherine Wall Emerson and Robert Wall Emerson
Let’s look at what is often considered common knowledge about vision, eyes, and blindness, and debunk some of the myths. Although we gain plenty of down-home, common-sense wisdom from our parents, a parent’s life is a busy one, and sometimes they don’t have the time to check all their facts. The fact is, much of what is considered common knowledge about our eyes is just plain wrong.
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs Save Money and the EnvironmentCompact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs not only help you save money, they also save energy. Despite these impressive benefits, the widespread use of CFLs has yet to catch on in many American households. In 2005, Americans purchased 5.5 million light bulbs a day, but only 5% of those were CFLs.
Vary Your Exercise Routine for Health Benefits—and Fun!Remember the old saying “Variety is the spice of life”? It turns out it applies to exercise, since repetitively performing the same routine day after day can become boring. In a University of Florida study, researchers discovered that individuals who followed a varied exercise program enjoyed their workouts significantly more than those who did not vary their exercise programs. People who varied their routines were also less likely to abandon their exercise programs.
Help Yourself Heal Through Guided ImageryDid you know that most people have as many as 10,000 thoughts and images go through their minds daily—and about half of these are negative? Although there is no miracle cure for changing or eliminating these negative thoughts, many people have successfully used a technique called guided imagery to project and achieve positive thoughts and, consequently, positive results in their lives. Guided imagery involves the use of directed thoughts and suggestions that allow an individual to achieve a more relaxed and focused state.
Hospice and Palliative Care: Know Your OptionsDealing with a serious illness or coming to the end of life are difficult, and pain management, emotional and spiritual needs, necessary care demands, confusion over insurance coverage, and financial strain all contribute to worsen these already challenging and painful situations. Family members and friends often shoulder the stressful emotional and physical burden of caring for loved ones, but they may not know where to turn for assistance. These caregivers are not alone, however. A growing number of organizations offering assistance with end-of-life issues are available. Known as hospice and palliative care programs, these organizations offer support to patients and their families in accepting and navigating the road to a peaceful ending.
Japan Says “No” to MetaboOn April 1, the Japanese government passed a law aimed at decreasing the incidence of metabolic syndrome, which is characterized by a set of risk factors for coronary heart disease, stroke, peripheral heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. One of these risk factors is waist size, and the Japanese law requires all companies and local governments to measure the waistlines of Japanese citizens between the ages of 40 and 74 as part of their annual checkups. This means that more than 56 million people will be measured, nearly 44% of the population.
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Brings Attention to an Important TopicOctober is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), with numerous events around the country designed to raise awareness. NBCAM’s educational campaign, “Pass the Word,” encourages women to take steps toward early detection of breast cancer. NBCAM was founded in 1985. The first NBCAM program was a week-long event coordinated by its two founding members, who distributed brochures, spoke to reporters, and testified before a United States congressional committee about the need for all women to have access to mammography.
Preventing Cancer Naturally: An OverviewThe statistics are staggering. Approximately 10,000,000 cases of cancer and 6,000,000 cancer-related deaths are reported worldwide each year. In the United States alone, over 1,500 people die from cancer every day, and over 1,300,000 cases are reported each year. Over 40% of men and 33% of women are at risk of developing some type of cancer in their lifetime. Cancer is second only to heart disease in the number of deaths each year.
For Your Consideration: The Case of Royal Raymond RifeIn November of 1931, 44 esteemed physicians gathered at the Pasadena estate of Dr. Milbank Johnson for an evening honoring “The End to All Diseases.” They were there to pay particular honor to two men making giant strides against disease. One of those men was Royal Raymond Rife.
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome: Introduction to a Rare but Life-Threatening DiseaseWhen Rick Place was 10 years old, he came home one day complaining of canker sores in his mouth. They were numerous and quite swollen and painful. The next day he refused to eat, and before the end of the week, he was hospitalized with a very serious illness. How could canker sores become life-threatening?
Girls on the Run Teaches Girls to Lead Positive, Healthy LivesYoung girls today are bombarded with artificial images of perfection. In many girls’ minds, these images are the standard of beauty and reflective of a girl’s worth in society.
Girls on the Run (GOTR), a nonprofit organization, is working to change conventional standards like these. GOTR was founded in 1996 by Molly Barker, a former high school teacher and four-time Hawaii Ironman triathlete. Her mission is to help preteen girls develop self-respect and lead healthy lifestyles through running.
Dance Therapy: Good for the Body and MindDancing is often perceived as a way to tone the body, but it’s been shown to benefit the mind as well. Using dance as therapy allows patients to express what they feel emotionally or physically without words, and it allows therapists valuable insights they might not be able to obtain otherwise.
