Integrative Health: What Does It Really Mean?
Is Integrative Health simply adding complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to traditional western (allopathic) medicine?  Many may think so.

At last week's National Wellness Conference in Stevens Point, WI, the National Wellness Institute unveiled a new Integrative Health Academy: three mornings were dedicated to defining integrative health, how to put it in practice, and how to market an integrative health practice or company.

First, Integrative Health is more than just adding in CAM or using integrative medicine. It incorporates everything from using CAM modalities, allopathic medicine when needed, but also excercise, stress resilience, healthy relationships, nutrition, self-care...it's the ultimate holographic approach to health and well-being.

How to use Integrative Health?  Here's a simple process to uncover what works best for you or a loved one:
  1. Awareness - Know that there might be other opportunities for health & healing. Begin recording what you eat, how you sleep, how you move, your energy level and how you feel.
  2. Discovery - Begin researching what might work for you.  I suggest starting with an allopathic (western) medical professional who is also trained in CAM.  This is a good bridge as you reach into this new world and way of being about health.
  3. Implementation - taking baby steps, begin to use the technique, modality, behavior change.
  4. Review - keep what works!  Take the best of each.
  5. Enjoy - a new path to well-being
