Millions of Americans have diabetes, with more diagnosed every day. There is a new study that shows that an alternate form of insulin may be possible in the future that allows diabetics to inject less often while maintaining adequately controlled blood glucose levels.
The types of insulin required by diabetics vary based on their blood glucose levels. As listed in the article on Medical News Today, “A new longer-acting form of insulin degludec has shown that when given once daily it is as effective at controlling blood sugar as existing insulin glargine injections but with lower rates of hypoglycaemia.”
Additional Phase 3 studies are required that will focus on safety and efficacy of this longer-lasting insulin. The desire is that if patients are able to inject less often that they may have less disruption to their lifestyles and may be more apt to remember to take it.
