There couldn’t be a more perfect time to feature an issue on nutrition than the beginning of our wonderful summer months. The farms are full of fresh fruits and vegetables. People are spending more time in the great outdoors grilling and enjoying their families. I do so love the summer time!

This month’s feature article is from Dr. Susan McCreadie from Ann Arbor. Dr. McCreadie specializes’ in nutrition in children when she’s not spending time with her family and absolutely beautiful daughters. So many parents struggle with what to feed their children and the age old question of how to get them to eat more vegetables. Thank you Dr. McCreadie for helping to make it all easier for us!

Dr. McCreadie and her business partner Angelle Batten teamed up and created a great new site and company, NourishMD.com. Be sure to check it out! It’s got lots of great ideas, yummy recipes, and all kinds of support for parents who want to help create the healthiest families and children they can. Thank both of you for all you’re doing for our communities!

We have a lot of other great articles this month, and even better, they are all about nutrition! I consider myself an above average consumer, but there are still so many things that I’m learning in my own journey to better health and wellness. What I’ve come to learn, particularly over the last year or two is just how much you can change about your own health just through diet changes. Simple, and even complex health problems can be alleviated or even diminished entirely by changing your diet.

We are all different in so many ways. We may have different allergies, affinities, likes and dislikes. Our bodies, although mostly similar in design and function, all have different needs and reactions to what we put in it. Some folks are allergic to gluten, some can’t tolerate milk products, we all have our own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to what our own particular bodies.

Having said that, we are covering many different “diets” and philosophies this month. We have an article about Dr. Weston A. Price who was a great pioneer not only in the research of indigenous and raw food diets but also in the research of dental decay and physical degeneration.

We also have an article highlighting sweeteners. It is an eye opening article, and while not definitive it certainly will inform you about many of the sweeteners available and the pros and cons of each. I had no idea that artificial sweeteners are used in everything from cosmetics to vitamins so that was a definite eye opener for me! I spent years using artificial sweeteners before I decided to make different choices. Because artificial sweeteners are so prevalent in the products we use every day, to me, it’s well worth the time in research to find out more information about what they are, how they are made, and what impact they may have on your body.

One of our articles discusses a fairly new approach to nutrition - nutrition response testing. I became introduced to this subject last year and have been fascinated by it. I have been a patient of nutrition response therapy for several months now with a great local practitioner. While everyone needs to make their own decisions about their personal health and wellness, I myself have really enjoyed the benefits of nutrition response testing. If you are looking for a way to supplement your own nutrition, there are many good resources in the Michigan area that now offer these services.

Another great topic that we’re covering is the Budwig Diet. The Budwig Diet is one that I have used personally in my home. One of my cats has a stomach tumor and was very ill. I actually used the Budwig Diet for him and the last time we took him to our vet, our vet said the tumor had not grown and actually seemed to have become a little smaller. I don’t actually know whether the Budwig Diet is the cause for that, but my unofficial guess is that it is. As you all know, I’m not a medical professional so I have no expertise to make any claims from a medical standpoint but what I do know is that we were very close to losing him and he really turned around once we changed his diet.

I think that’s one of the reasons why I love this issue of CoSozo Living so much - it really is amazing to see what substantial and even life changing differences we can make with just diet changes. So often we can feel like we have few choices when we find ourselves ill. And while diet changes can feel awkward or uncomfortable for a while, it really is empowering to experience the benefits of making better choices with the foods that nourish our bodies.

Make sure you do your research, and make sure you discuss diet changes with your health practitioners. Taking simple steps with your diet and making more informed decisions about the foods you eat can really benefit not only your body, but your mind and spirit as well. This is the perfect time of year to start making some of those changes because the summer months are here and so are all the great fruits and vegetables. We love to grill in my house so the summer months means even more of that. We’ve grilled everything from fennel to plantains! Be adventurous with your diet and enjoy the summer!
