Blood Sugar Measurements by Laser?
Currently diabetics measure blood sugar by invasive methods - namely pricking their fingers to run a spot of their blood through a glucose monitoring device. But what if they could begin to use non-invasive methods, like laser light, to determine their blood glucose levels? Scientists are hoping that one day that reality will come true. A study detailing a current prototype device created by a team of electrical engineer from Princeton University was recently published in Biomedical Optics Express.

"The device works by sending a laser beam through skin cells - without causing damage - to be absorbed by sugar molecules. The target is not blood sugar as such, but the sugar content of dermal interstitial fluid, which has a strong correlation with blood sugar."

Mid-infrared light of the frequency needed by the team for this process is selected using a new type of device called a "quantum cascade laser". When the team compared their findings to the conventional finger-prick glucose tests, they were able to achieve results within the required clinical ranges.
