Mephedrone, a recently reclassified drug in the UK, has been evaluated in six samples by Dr. John Lough of the University of Sunderland. As a result, researchers have identified that the risks of overdosing are elevated because the quality of the product varies so greatly even without large impurities. The lack of impurities suggests that the drug had been developed in synthetic labs. Three of the samples revealed various sizes of particles and crystalline form, meaning that the drug is more likely to have large variation in the affect and safety of the user.
The illegal drug is also known as Moonshine, Meow Meow, and M-cat. It is sold online as a plant fertilizer and is popular in the UK. It is currently unscheduled in the U.S. but has been banned also in North Dakota. The drug has caused a number of deaths in the U.K. already.
Dr Lough said: “Safety is generally linked to the concentration of a drug circulating in the body. If mephedrone displayed adverse effects at concentrations close to that needed by users to obtain a ‘hit’ then there would be a serious danger of users suffering adverse effects because of the uncertainty surrounding how much drug they were ingesting...”
